Manchester United V Newcastle United Report:

Newcastle United cruised to an emphatic win over struggling rivals Manchester United last night, with a 0-3 victory securing their place in the quarter final of the EFL Cup.

The teams lined up with changes of plenty for both sides. Newcastle United opted for a 4-3-3 formation, with 8 changes from the team against Wolves. Dubravka started in goal, Krafth and Dummett as the CB partnership and Livramento and Targett the preferred fullbacks. The midfield for the Magpies consisted of Willock, Hall and Longstaff with the front line made up from Gordon, Joelinton and Ritchie.

As for Manchester United, the Red Devils made seven changes after their disappointing defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, going for a 4-2-3-1 formation. Onana kept his spot in goal, along with Maguire and Linelöf at CB. Reguilon and Dalot were both given starts. Casemiro made his return after being kept out through an injury picked up on international duty, he played alongside Hannibal. Garnacho, Mount and Antony appeared as a line of attack, with Martial as the central target man.

The game began rather cagey with little chances for either team as they tried to work each other out. Newcastle United were forced into an early substitution after Matt Targett was unable to continue due to what looked to be a hamstring issue – more injury concerns for Eddie Howe. However, this livened the game up when substitute Miguel Almiron began creating problems down the left.

Hannibal was the first player to pick up a booking in the fixture, after a careless challenge on Longstaff. Just a few moments later he dived into another senseless tackle, this time on Dummet. The referee, Robert Jones opted not to give a second yellow card. With no VAR to intervene, the Red Devils dodged dropping to 10 men.

The problems kept coming for Manchester United, as Eddie Howe’s men kept creating chances down the left hand side – keeping Dalot and Hannibal on strings.

The first goal came in the 28th minute, when Livramento broke down the right side, flying to the edge of the box, before sliding a neat pass into the feet of Almiron – who slotted the ball with a cool finish into the right corner of Onana’s goal. 0-1!

The chances kept coming for the Magpies, as the away fans sang in fine voice at Old Trafford – enjoying their trip out. They didn’t have to wait too long at all for the next goal, when in the 36th minute, boyhood Newcastle fan Lewis Hall volleyed a spectacular effort into the bottom of the right hand corner. Manchester United were victims of their own demise as they stood motionless and complained about a free kick decision in the build up to the goal.

Half -time came with the visitors sailing. A grim – faced Ten Hag stormed down the tunnel, left with some decisions to make. The answer he came up with was to make a double substitution; Aaron Wan – Bissaka and Sofyan Amrabat in for Dalot and Casemiro.

Chances began to fall for the home team – with the substitutions appearing to have sparked some life into the defeated – looking side. However, the Magpies did well to absorb the pressure that was beginning to build – still looking to attack on the counter if the opportunity was to arise.

Which is exactly what they did! A challenge from Joelinton robbed Amrabat of possession, where the ball is gathered by Willock, who charged at the box – before firing the ball into the back of the net, into the bottom of the right side of the goal! What a finish! 0-3!

Ten Hag called on the troops, however the game already looked decided. Rashford, Fernandes, and Højlund, looked to inject some urgency and desire into the game – but it just wasn’t to be for the home side.

At the final whistle, the roar from the Newcastle fans signified another fantastic victory, and a place in the next round of the EFL cup. Ten Hag has a big task on his hands now to bring his side back after another dampening and damaging defeat, as they face Fulham away on the 4th of November in the Premier League. In contrast, the Mags will be full of confidence returning to St James’ as they head into their next fixture against Arsenal, hoping to take 3 points from the team currently sitting second in the league table.

The draw for the next round took place shortly after the match was brought to a close, with Newcastle drawing an away trip to London, facing Chelsea on December 19.

Other draws included Port Vale V Middlesbrough, Everton V Fulham and Liverpool V West Ham. Will the Magpies be able to progress into the next round?
